Spot-Clean or Wash Dog Clothes? Decide by the Soil and Care Label

If your dog's garment has one isolated mark and the care label allows spot cleaning, spot-clean it. If dirt, mud, or drool has spread across several areas, cleaning the whole garment usually makes more sense, but only with the method the label approves. That method may be hand washing, so a full clean does not automatically mean using the machine.

Routine washing and spot care are separate instructions. The FTC rule text defines regular care as routine rather than spot care. A label's washing directions describe how to clean the garment as a whole. They do not tell you how to treat a single mark.
A full clean can mean a sink, not a machine. "Wash the whole garment" and "machine-wash it" are two separate decisions. Choose the scope first. Then use the exact method on the label.
