The right outfit for a Havanese in spring depends on the day's weather. On a dry, mild day, a light layer is enough if you want your dog in clothes at all. On a rainy walk, a rain dog jacket fits the job better, but how well it works depends on its material and fit.
Spring weather can change in a single day. Make the choice before each walk instead of keeping one outfit on all season. When you get home from a damp walk, check your dog's coat and the garment before dressing again.
Light layer or rainwear? Match clothes to spring conditions
Start with the forecast. Dry and mild weather calls for a light layer, and rain calls for rainwear. A light shirt is not built to keep a long coat dry.
For a dry, mild outing, consider a light layer
Clothing is optional on a pleasant day. If you'd like a layer, pick something lightweight and breathable. One example from our shop is the I Sniff Spring Dog Shirt. It's made of 95% cotton and 5% spandex, a breathable fabric meant for warm-weather outings. It's a fair-weather shirt, not rain gear, so leave it home when showers are coming. For more choices sized for the breed, look through our Havanese clothes collection or our wider range of spring dog clothes.
Rain calls for a raincoat, and raincoats vary
On a wet walk, use real rainwear. Don't expect every raincoat to protect your dog equally. The AKC says raincoat material affects protection. Polyester or duck canvas repels water better than a fleece or flannel exterior does. Fit matters too. A coat that's too tight restricts movement, and a coat that's too loose lets rain seep through and soak the fur. Before you buy, measure your dog's neck, chest, and stomach with a soft tape, plus the length from neck to the base of the tail. Our dog raincoat guide covers more features to compare.
After a damp walk, check both coat and clothing
Take the garment off first, then check your dog and the garment separately. That way you can see which one still needs drying.
Coat and garment get checked one at a time
Run your fingers under the outer hair to feel whether the coat underneath is damp. Then turn the garment inside out and feel the inner surface or lining. A raincoat can look dry on the outside and still be wet inside.
Dry what is damp before dressing again
Damp fur: The AKC advises you to dry after a damp-weather walk by pressing a towel gently into the fur. Don't rub hard, because vigorous rubbing can cause tangles and mats. Longer coats need thorough drying for the same reason.
Damp garment: Dry it the way its care label says.
Brushing a full-length adult coat: The Havanese Club of America's full-length coat brushing guidance says never to brush the coat dry and to use a conditioning spray first.
Redress: Only put clothes back on once both the coat and the garment are dry.
FAQs
Does a Havanese need clothes every spring day?
No. A garment is optional on dry, mild days. Decide based on each walk's conditions instead of using one outfit all season.
What raincoat features help on wet spring walks?
According to the AKC, a nylon lining dries faster than more absorbent materials, even when it gets wet. A detachable hood can help keep water out of your dog's ears, and you can take it off when the rain is light.
Does the brushing advice apply to a short haircut?
The Havanese Club of America's no-dry-brushing advice is written for full-length adult coats. If your Havanese has a short haircut, ask your breeder or groomer for care instructions that match that cut.
Can I check my dog's skin while drying?
Yes. The AKC notes that drying is a good time to look for lumps, scrapes, scabs, or irritation that might need a vet's attention.
